From the River Dráva to the Mecsek Hills visitors can find here exceptionally diversified values concerning biological and botanical aspects.
The River Dráva forming the state border has got peculiar flora and fauna - a sight not to be missed by anyone who's fond of open waters.
There is a botanical speciality in the neighbourhood of the village Bürüs (Sellye forestry district) where natural (not planted) beech-trees can be found. This tree, which is native in hilly lands, lives here in natural stocks together with peduncular oaks and hornbeams. Beech is well renewed on a natural way and our company takes advantage of it to sustain the beech stock.
One may glance back to glorious historical times by visiting the Zrínyi Castle in Szigetvár.
From the village Almamellék a narrow-gauge railway line operated by the forestry company leads to Sasrét that is surrounded by marvellous beech-trees mixed with silver linden. Here we can find one of the most beautiful "natural cathedrals" of the Zselic region: the ancient beech forest which is 185 years old.
Heading towards Pécs first we reach the western part of the Mecsek Hills and then the Eastern Mecsek. Although its natural treasures can be perceived even during a car trip, it is much nicer to hike in the hills.
The Jakab Hill (602 m) formed of sandstone in the Permian Age is a place of touristic and historical significance on account of the ruins of a monastery belonging to the "Pálos" order, the earthwork fortress of the Avars and the hard conglomerates called "Babás szerkövek"(Stone-dolls) on the steep southern side of the hill in the direction of Kővágószőlős.
The limestones on the southern side of the Misina Hill towered over the city of Pécs are covered with a karstic bush-forest of smoke-trees that are the nicest in the autumn. This part of the hill is a popular trekking place for tourists. The look-out terrace of the TV tower built on the Misina Hill offers an extraordinary view to the 2000 years old city and the oak-beech forests on the northern side.
The natural preserve area of the Melegmányi Valley can only be reached by foot. Here we can find waterfalls on travertine basis attracting tourists particularly in the springtime thawning period.
The highest peak of the hills is the Zengő (682 m) located in the Eastern Mecsek.
Püspökszentlászló once the resort place of the bishop is now famous for its arboretum. The most beautiful protected flower of the Mecsek, the peony of Bánát (Peonia officinalisvar Banatica) blooms in May on the hillside over the village.
The Máré Castle can be reached by car from the Magyaregregy Valley. There is also a road leading to Pusztabánya, a settlement famous for its glass-works originating from the 18th Century. Nowadays the Mecsek Forestry Plc. takes care of it as a relic of industrial history.
The resort village of Kisújbánya is located in beautiful natural surroundings. Following the brook we can walk to Óbánya a village which is the eastern gate of the Mecsek Hills and famous for its pottery.
